To,

Dear Sir,
The article Prem Chand and Arya Samaj by Shri Pradeep Jain published in April, 2009, issue of Urdu Duniya reveals the close and continuous linkage of Prem Chand with the Arya Samaj. Everybody appreciates the role of the Arya Samaj for social reform in the Hindu society. But Arya Samaj has another aspect exemplified by its founder Shri Dayanand Saraswati’s diatribe against Islam and Christianity in his book Satyarth Prakash. Since, I have not read all writings of Prem Chand on Arya Samaj or speeches on the Arya Samaj platform; I do not know whether he ever criticized Arya Samaj’s vilification of Islam and Christianity.

The article says that a research scholar has obtained a PhD in Hindi on the Influence of Arya Samja on Prem Chand. The writer has suggested that this forgotten aspect of Prem Chand’s life should be brought before the world of literature. But, for this, it is necessary that all writings of Prem Chand on, and his relation with Arya Samaj published in various journals and books are collected and published.

What is important is the revelation that some of his known writings on this subject have not been included in the 24 volume Kuliyat-e-Prem Chand published by NCPUL. The NCPUL owes it to the Urdu speaking community to clarify whether the omission was deliberate or accidental. In any case, this matter should be included in a revised edition.

Yours faithfully

(Syed Shahabuddin)
